Thanks to Gabriella for the "turkey talk" idea!
Second Step
Where is a great place to learn about complex feelings, understanding different perspectives and walking in other people's shoes? 4K Second Step, where we watch videos and discuss scenarios of people just like us, who find themselves in real-life situations. That way, if we are in those situations, we will know how to handle it. Right now, we are focusing on stuff like empathy, being assertive, and even failure (is it always such a bad thing?)!
Writers Workshop
In workshop, we are finishing our realistic fiction stories and starting to type our drafts into Google Docs. We are studying the different types of lenses for writing. One lens is called a "cardboard character," which is when the author steps into the character's shoes to better understand the character's "FAST!" (Feelings, Actions, Sayings, Thoughts) Also, we are thinking of ways to end our stories in an exciting way. We are using a checklist to reflect on our stories through specific lenses.
Reading
We are reading a play called, Invasion From Mars in our Journeys book. During Reader's Theater, we are working in groups to memorize and act out parts of the play. We will use our imaginations to make every day items a prop to support our scene. Our live audience will be our 2nd Grade buddies in Mrs. Pesce's class!
For our read aloud, we are finishing The Kid Who Ran for President. We are looking forward to comparing the end of the book to the end of the play that we saw last week. While reading this together, we have found connections to the real 2016 election! We find it fascinating that not much has changed in the world of politics since Gutman wrote this book back in 1996!
Our teachers introduced a new app called Newsela, which we can access from home and school using our Google password. Our teacher has the power to assign us current event articles. Newsela hosted a student vote for the 2016 election, where we were able to cast our votes before the polls closed.
Math
We are starting our Geometry Unit! Did you know that "Geo" means Earth and "metry" means measurement? We are focusing on the important base vocabulary needed to communicate as mathematicians. Some of those important words are: point, line, line segment, plane, rays, angles, and dimension.
We spent almost five minutes of math class looking at a line! "Why?" you may ask? We have never looked at a line in this way before! We found out that it goes on forever in both directions (do you know how long that is?) and that it's made up of point, after point, after point, after point... we could go on forever! We are looking forward to more surprises!
