Students in 4K work collaboratively in GoogleDocs to create our learning reflection below. Each group of students is assigned a subject to report out and reflect on. This process keeps students in touch with their learning, provides practice communicating ideas within a group, and uses technology as a tool for learning. We hope you enjoy our newsletter as much as we enjoy making it!
Math

In 4K we have been finding factors of different numbers. We’ve been learning about prime and composite. One of the strategies to find if something is prime or composite is by using a factor rainbow.
We have also been measuring 4K and 2B and collecting data. We organized our data and put it on line plots to show how many inches tall we are. We have been working on array picture problems that is where you have a array with something covering part of it and we have to get the total of the array.we have to choose a question that you can answer by collecting measurement data.We have done a aimsweb test and maps testing. We have been doing lots of word problems. In the being of the year we were finding how many in the array with most of the array covered.
Reading
by Tori, Zoe and Alec
In 4K we have read many stories in our Journeys book! Some of these are Because of Winn-Dixie, My Brother Martin, My Librarian Is a Camel, and The Power of W.O.W. In The Power of W.O.W we are doing a Readers Theater play. Readers Theater is when we have different characters and act out our assigned scenes in the story. The Power of W.O.W is about a little girl and her friends who try to save a traveling library that comes to her neighborhood.
The kids raise money so they can save the W.O.W library. W.O.W stands for Words on Wheels.
After we read a story several times we take a comprehension test based on the story. Some of the questions on our comprehension test are vocabulary words from the story. We also do “Lit Circles” which is when we read a story in small groups that have a connection with what we are learning.
At the end of our Journeys Book there is a dictionary to look up the vocabulary words in all the stories. Reading in 4K is an amazing subject because we learn new things like Civil Rights and how the world around us works. In our reading we make responses to different videos, for example we watched a video about a pig we made a response about what Ormie the pig wanted do and how he could do it. Our reading in 4K is constantly getting better every time we open a book.
Social Studies
by Clara, Kenny, Bryce, and Rose
So far in Social Studies, we are learning about natural resources. We learned that a renewable resource is something that can be replaced by nature, or grow back, and a “non-renewable resource cannot be replaced, or takes too long to grow back. Some examples of renewable resources are wood, plants, oxygen, and water. Some non renewable resources are fossil fuels, uranium, and minerals. -*
We also learned about the 13 original colonies. We made maps labeling the colonies, and learned about the climate of the East. I think the colonies are interesting, especially the part about Maine and Massachusetts being one colonies and separate states. We learned about the marketing economy there. People are free to decide what to make and what to make it for. Sometimes businesses trade to get the resources they want. Trades begin when one person has what another wants.
We learned about the four main regions, the East, the southeast, Midwest, and west. Regions can be based on any shared feature.
We learned lots about weather and climate in different regions, too. Climate is the typical weather conditions in a place or area over a long period of time. Precipitation is water that falls to the earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Another condition is temperature. Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold the air is. Elevation is the height of the land. We also learned about entrepreneurs and ownership. Entrepreneurs are people who start the factors of a production to start new business. Entrepreneurs take risks when they start new businesses. They invest their time and money in something that may not work. We sometimes go onto google classroom, and Ms.K posts directions for us. She lets us watch brain pop videos, and we really like those. We all agree that social studies is cool. We watched two really awesome rap videos about natural resources. We think that all the states and regions we learned about is all very valuable information. We don't know if you noticed, but social studies is geography. Geography is the study of people and places of earth. It explains the forces that shape the land and explores how living things are connected to the places where they live.
Overall, we’ve learned about how the world works and how people cooperate with each other.
Science

We’ve been learning about what does and does not stick to magnets. Objects that have iron or metal attract to magnets. We did an experiment to see how many washers it takes to break the force of a magnet, with or without plastic chips. In class we been using an app on our iPad called Explain Everything to record our data. We rubbed a magnet on a nail so the nail could attract a paper clip. We also got to see how many objects two magnets could still connect through. Magnets connect because there magnetic domains line up.
We’ve also been working with electricity, meaning connecting wires to light bulbs, batteries, and objects to try and make a electrical current. Our first experiment with electricity was using a wire, battery, and lightbulb to make the lightbulb light. When someone lit the bulb they would yell we did it or WOW. We also took light switches so we could turn the bulb on and off. Electricity can travel through water and metal. We have been using brainpop a lot. brainpop is is a app were you can watch videos that our information
Overall, we are learning a lot about magnetism and electricity!
Writing Workshop
By Griffin, Hailey and Aoife
In 4K writing workshop we have been writing our own stories, making T-charts,and unpacking characteristics. We also have been creating our own story arcs and working on show me not tell me. We have read Fireflies and made a story arc. A story arc is arc shaped list of the important senses in a story. We also do wants and what gets in the way. We also take some time to develop their feelings and thoughts. We take some time to do their inner beauty. We also have to be very good with details. Also we are not supposed to have tell me stories. We have to draft for 1-2 days, revise for 8-11 days, edit are story, and then publish our story. We are working very hard writing our own amazing stories and we can’t wait to share them with you.
