Reading
We are currently reading Me and Uncle Romie in our Journeys books. It is a realistic fiction story about a boy named James who visits his Aunt Nanette and Uncle Romie in New York City. The story is based on the life of artist Romare Bearden, whose art was influenced by African American lives during Harlem Renaissance.
We have read a few other stories in Journeys such as Stormalong and Invasion From Mars. Invasion From Mars is a play based on Orson Wells' War of the Worlds back in the 1930's, where people tuned in to the broadcast and were alarmed at what they heard. It was all a misunderstanding but people were scared!
We finished our read aloud, The Penderwick's, and are looking forward to our next one! We will vote from a stack of choices Miss K. presents to us.
Math
We have been learning about multiplication and division. We are learning how to construct multiple towers, and they are exactly what they sound like! They are a tower of any multiple. By adding the same number over and over again, we hit multiples of that number and find the connection to multiplication. For example, if 6 is our base number, then the first three multiples are 6, 12, and then 18. So, 3x6=18, because 18 is the third multiple of 6.
We have also been exploring division stories. We first read and solved and eventually created our own for friends to solve on GoogleDocs. In each problem, we must identify the equation, find an accurate solution to embed into a sentence, and create a visual representation (area model / array) to reinforce the action in the problem.
Writing
In workshop, we finished our realistic fiction stories! It was quite a process and we are proud of our hard work. Currently, we are beginning our persuasive essays, which is called, "Boxes and Bullets." We first designed a thesis statement (the box) based on something we feel passionate about. After a few sessions of "tightening up" our statements, we began to identify three reasons (bullets) to support the thesis statement. We use a writing checklist (rubric) as we create our individual pieces.
Social Studies
We have been learning about The East region of the United States. We are wrapping this up by creating flipbooks to include different parts of The East's geography and history.
Science
We have been making telegraphs and exploring morse code messages with electromagnets. It's fun to create different messages and think about this form of communication throughout history.
